It is just to your finish it actually starts to break apart, nevertheless the smack-upwards finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may smartly dialogued, it will have zero great problem when you look at the life style off the extremely unsightly title.” [ 8 ]

Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The film moves in the an easy rate, the fresh conversation is smooth and you may characterisations fundamentally effective. Brand new film’s author and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess games, getting mortal limits, between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked in the casino and you may old a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic program, new cast’s suavely regulated gestures from like and you may menace, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly cocky photo (also his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a hidden vintage of one’s genre.” [ ten ]

Photograph provides activity and you will anticipation, and you will specific brief matches out-of jokes to incorporate style. Ace activities by the Penis Powell, because a gaming household overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, given that a police inspector, including up the get . Even though the plot uses a familiar trend, the fresh new characterizations try fresh in addition to performances sufficient so you can overbalance. Dialog is terse and relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney contact. Unusual cam angles come along on occasion so you’re able to escalate interest and momentarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling since movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, new publisher and associate manufacturer, also helps with making it a soft manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

It is mainly a matter of watching Mr. Powell read their paces fashionably when you are a big throw off actors and you can stars promote your classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little woman who brings forth the finest in your and you will Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen which will get him to the jams. Thomas Gomez is oily due to the fact villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does another type of in a position tour since a weary cops inspector exactly who fundamentally shuts happening. A lot of ingesting and puffing is performed by the all concerned.” [ twelve ]
